In 2015 Mexican Architecture firms COA Arquitectura and Estudio Macias Peredo completed the Chacala House in Jalisco. Enhancing the surrounding vegetation and beautiful views, a modular grid of concrete columns and beams acts as a skeleton that orders and qualifies the spaces blending the exterior with the interior.

Chacala House Technical Information

The house can live as closed or open as you want, allowing you to enjoy the sea breeze and vegetation that seeks to introduce the jungle immediate context by a rich variety of species.

Embracing Nature’s Harmony

Text by the Architects

The project was a rest house that included social areas and a master bedroom on the ground floor, all overlooking the sea, with four additional bedrooms to accommodate the family, as well as service areas.

A huge fig tree, a palm tree, and visual openings to the sea were key elements in the house’s design.

The palm serves to enclose a courtyard entrance where vegetation interacts with the apparent structure. These elements welcome visitors and announce the theme of the entire house: a grid of columns and beams akin to a skeleton that modulates, organizes, defines, and enriches the different spaces.

The main enclosure forms a palapa that houses an open living and dining room, adjoining a pool that extends to the auction house, seamlessly blending its border with the ocean horizon.

The palapa is complemented on one side by a patio deck on the axis marked by the fig tree, followed by another courtyard that introduces light and vegetation to the family room area. The master bedroom is located at the beginning of the same axis, and through the sequence of courtyards, occupants can enjoy the scenery without losing privacy.

A semi-open staircase leads to the four bedrooms upstairs, modulated under the same order and thatched by two palapas. These create a double-height space housing the bathroom with a timber closure, upon which a loft is enabled.

The house can be as closed or open as desired, allowing inhabitants to enjoy the sea breeze and the vegetation that seeks to introduce the immediate jungle context through a wide variety of species.

The use of transparent materials, palapas, and wood aims to create a “natural and relaxed” atmosphere.

This is a house to live in, to observe, to relax, or simply to be.
