The DEYA Day Care and After-School Center in Yantai, Shandong Province, China, is a vivid example to how thoughtful design can transform educational environments. Created by 11-Design for children ages 6 to 12, this 270-square-meter facility adopts a whimsical “tent” concept, leveraging low-cost materials to craft a playful yet nurturing space that stimulates both learning and rest.

Design Intent and Spatial Configuration
The project’s design centers on the “tent” motif, symbolizing freedom, exploration, and safety. By becoming the primary spatial unit, the tent redefines traditional notions of learning and rest areas into an imaginative environment. Such accommodation aspires to create a community-rich atmosphere that fosters personal growth beyond academia, motivated by the leaders’ vision to cultivate creativity and community among the young users.
Material Strategy and Craft
The project’s material selection underscores its dedication to economy and locality. Key materials such as plywood, canvas, and orange steel pipes were chosen for their affordability and sustainable origins. The design eschews unnecessary adornments, allowing the structure’s inherent simplicity and honesty to shine through. Lighting is integrally woven into the framework, ensuring that each element coherently contributes both aesthetically and functionally to the overall design.
DEYA Day Care and After-School Center in its Environmental and Cultural Context
Situated on a third floor overlooking tree-lined streets, DEYA Day Care capitalizes on natural light and views, with minimal shading ensuring a seamless connection with its urban setting. Locally-sourced materials and collaboration with local fabricators not only align with sustainable practices but also bolster community ties. The conceptual use of “tents” nods to cultural narratives around shelter and exploration, enriching the cultural dimension of childhood development and education.
Experiential Qualities and Architectural Atmosphere
Light and spatial dynamics are integral to the DEYA Center’s experiential qualities. The cascading platforms serve multi-functional purposes, transitioning from play zones to resting areas while enhancing exploration through interactive engagement. Large windows infuse the space with daylight, establishing a tranquil yet active environment. The spatial organization facilitates efficient movement, positioning community and staff areas strategically while maintaining open vistas.
