James Gowan (1923 – 2015) was a prominent British architect known for his innovative and influential designs during the mid-to-late 20th century. James Gowan’s most notable collaboration was with fellow architect James Stirling, with whom he formed the Stirling and Gowan architectural partnership. The duo’s most celebrated work is the Leicester University Engineering Building, completed in 1963, which is regarded as a groundbreaking example of modernist architecture. The partnership dissolved in 1963, but Gowan continued to have a successful solo career. Throughout his career, Gowan’s work was characterized by a unique blend of modernist and traditional elements and a focus on structural clarity and refined detailing.
