Aldo van Eyck

Aldo van Eyck was a Dutch architect and a pivotal figure in the architectural movement known as Structuralism. Born on March 16, 1918, and passing away on January 14, 1999, van Eyck was instrumental in challenging the then-dominant functionalist approach to design. He emphasized the importance of human-scale design and sought to create spaces that reflected human needs and relationships. His works, including numerous innovative playground designs in Amsterdam and the famous Orphanage in Amsterdam, blend architectural form with philosophical insights and showcase a profound understanding of social connections and spatial dynamics.

“Whatever space and time mean, place and occasion mean more.” – Aldo van Eyck
