Geoffrey Bawa

Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) was a highly influential Sri Lankan architect who is recognized as the father of “Tropical Modernism,” a design approach that merges modernist architecture with the unique characteristics of tropical environments. Bawa’s works are renowned for their seamless integration with the surrounding landscape, use of local materials, and the blending of interior and exterior spaces. His late start in architecture, following careers in law and gardening, brought a distinctive perspective to his designs. His legacy includes a diverse range of structures, from homes and hotels to schools and public buildings, including notable projects like the Kandalama Hotel and the Sri Lankan Parliament Building. Bawa’s impactful contributions have been recognized globally, including with the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
