In the charming market town of Malling, near Aarhus, Denmark, the architectural firm CEBRA has masterfully combined historical reverence with contemporary living in the new Malling Dampmølle housing complex. This innovative project breathes new life into the site of a former nineteenth-century steam mill, seamlessly integrating 52 modern dwellings into the local suburban landscape.

Malling Dampmølle Housing Technical Information

The housing complex is a variation of the terraced house typology designed around three central courtyards creating a sculptural form. The yards open towards the surroundings as the wings radiate out from the centre of the plot to create an irregular star plan, shaped by the oblique angles of the site perimeter.

A Blend of History and Modernity

Malling Dampmølle, strategically situated between the station and the local church, occupies a significant historical location. The design thoughtfully acknowledges its heritage, creating a unique architectural dialogue between past and present. Positioned between Gammel Østergårdsvej and Holmskovvej, the complex features a striking façade that transitions from one floor near the station to three floors towards Bredgade, offering a visual connection to its surroundings. The structure is set back from Holmskovvej, reducing traffic noise and enhancing residents’ tranquility.

The architectural design employs a variation of the terraced house typology, organized around three central courtyards. These courtyards, forming a sculptural star-shaped plan, provide intimate environments for residents while maintaining a strong link to the historical context of the steam mill. By manipulating the roof surface to rise and fall, the design ensures minimal shadow impact on adjacent private gardens, enhancing the sense of community and privacy.

Malling Dampmølle’s design is a distinct interpretation of the local urban fabric, drawing inspiration from the traditional small, detached brick houses prevalent in the area. The use of robust, long-lasting materials, such as dark bricks with dyed joints, natural slate roofs, and zinc flashings and gutters, reflects a commitment to sustainability and minimal maintenance. The cohesive dark shade of the roofs and facades, combined with minimal detailing, gives the development a sculptural, unified appearance.

The housing complex fosters a voluntary community spirit, featuring shared amenities such as a communal house, guest apartment, greenhouse, and kitchen gardens. These facilities encourage social interaction and community engagement, attracting a diverse mix of residents, including both older and younger families. The variety of housing units, from single-story homes with garden access to two-story terraced houses with balconies overlooking communal courtyards, caters to different lifestyles and preferences, promoting social diversity and a well-functioning community.
