Casa Banderas is a project that arises from the reuse and recycling of a previous architectural proposal, never built, adapted to its new location in Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico. This act of recycling has enabled the rediscovery and reimagining of the project’s potential in a completely new environment.

Architectural Recycling: A New Lease on Life
Casa Banderas began as a phoenix rising from the ashes of a previous, unbuilt design. The team at Rea Studio masterfully adapted this earlier proposal to its new home in Nuevo Vallarta. This process wasn’t just about relocation but a complete re-envisioning of the project’s potential in a new, vibrant urban-tropical context.
The architectural approach for Casa Banderas revolves around creating spaces that offer both refuge and privacy while embracing the concept of stereotomy (the art of cutting solids like stone or wood) and simplicity. The design strategically incorporates openings and carefully crafted screens to respond to the natural light and prevailing winds of the region. This results in a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, offering a sanctuary in the midst of urban life.
A standout feature is the imposing pink screen wall on the west facade. Towering over 8 meters, this sculptural element adds depth and a burst of color, symbolizing creativity, tranquility, and courtship. More than just a visual spectacle, it adds a symbolic dimension to the spatial experience, inviting occupants into a visually captivating atmosphere.
In terms of materials and finishes, Casa Banderas embraces simplicity, allowing the natural surroundings and furnishings to take center stage. Natural stuccos, neutral-toned porcelain, and uniformly-grained woodwork are chosen to highlight the vegetation and allow the furniture and decor to define the home’s identity. This approach turns the house into a blank canvas for occupants to personalize and reflect their tastes and lifestyle.
Despite structural challenges posed by the artistic proposal and the extensive span in the double-height living-dining-kitchen area, the project stands as a testament to creative adaptation and persistence. Innovative solutions were key in realizing a logical, honest, and imperfect architectural project, even within a constrained budget.
