In the bustling Eixample district of Barcelona, a new culinary location has emerged, redefining the neighborhood bar’s concept. Vereda, brought to life by the design studio A SPACE ABOUT (ASA), is a 60 m² space that seamlessly blends the coziness of traditional bars with the flair of modern design. This once-abandoned establishment at the intersection of Diputación and Villarroel streets has been spectacularly transformed into a hub for natural wines and local cuisine.

Vereda Technical Information

In terms of space, we sought to recover the original elements and play with them. The terrazzo floor we found by removing the various layers of pavement that had been added over the years, the existing bar from the original venue with a curved detail that is now difficult to replicate, and that transported us to the classic bar of yesteryear, were some of the premises when designing the place.

ASA’s Tribute to Barcelona’s Social Hubs

ASA, under the creative guidance of founders Laura Blanch and Noa Massanet, has masterfully preserved the space’s soul while infusing it with contemporary elements. The central theme of “Vereda,” which in Latin America signifies a place of social gathering, is vividly brought to life through the design. The use of green in varying shades dominates the space, adorning tiles, walls, ceilings, and windows, creating a lively and inviting atmosphere.

One of ASA’s remarkable feats in this project is the restoration of the original terrazzo flooring and an old bar counter. These elements, combined with a green-painted wooden framework and custom tiles, form a unique composition that bridges the past and present. The original bar, with its classic curved detail, anchors the space in tradition, while strategic modifications like the repositioned bar and large windows foster a new, dynamic interaction between the interior and exterior.

Vereda’s spatial layout has been thoughtfully reimagined to prioritize customer comfort. The downsized and relocated bar provides more room for seating, and an additional drink bar enhances the space’s functionality. The upper level houses a preparation area, communal bathrooms, a group seating area, and storage, exemplifying efficient use of space.

The culinary vision of Vereda, led by chef Julieta and sommelier Alessandro, is a harmonious blend of tradition and global inspiration. The restaurant positions itself as Eixample Esquerra’s new “neighborhood bar,” offering a familiar yet elevated experience through its simple yet authentic aesthetics and material palette of stainless steel, tiles, and wood.

ASA’s commitment to community and tradition extends beyond the kitchen. Collaborating with local artists and craftsmen like Albert Villegas for graphic design, Gabinete Exquisito and Paula Serra for illustrations, and Wodom Studio for furniture, ASA has transformed Vereda into a space that not only serves food but also narrates stories and fosters connections.
