Viikki Church by JKMM Architects is a timber parish building in Helsinki’s Eco-Viikki district, completed in 2005 as a civic and spiritual anchor for Latokartano. The project reworks the Finnish wooden church tradition through prefabricated glulam structure, weathering aspen cladding, and interiors conceived as clearings within a constructed forest.

Urban Threshold and Civic Presence

Viikki Church occupies a strategic position within Latokartano, where it mediates between the eastern and western parts of the district and addresses the edge of a public square. Rather than standing apart as an isolated sacred object, the building completes a narrowing landscape sequence and gives civic weight to a developing residential area. Its orientation, massing, and material character distinguish it from the surrounding service buildings, whose more regular brick volumes establish a contrasting urban grain.

The church’s public presence depends less on height alone than on the careful calibration of thresholds. A freestanding bell tower marks the approach before the main volume is reached, while granite boulders, planted edges, vines, timber benches, and a stone forecourt slow the transition from square to entrance. This sequence gives the building a layered civic role: it is at once a marker, a gathering place, and a passage into ritual space.

The exterior is composed as a cluster of timber volumes with curved upper profiles, their grey-weathering aspen shingles softening the mass without dissolving its civic legibility. The slender cross, the detached tower, and the shaped roofline refer to ecclesiastical typologies, but the building avoids direct historical quotation. Its identity emerges through construction, texture, and siting rather than through applied symbolism.

Forest Metaphor and Spatial Organization

The plan reinterprets the cruciform church type as a contemporary parish building, accommodating worship, parish halls, offices, clubrooms, and service areas within a single timber organism. The cross-shaped reference is not treated as a diagram to be preserved intact, but as a spatial framework capable of absorbing daily community functions. This shift is significant for a modern Lutheran building, where the church must operate beyond scheduled services and support a wider pattern of social use.

Inside, the governing metaphor is the forest. Bundled glulam columns rise through the halls in clustered groups, producing a vertical rhythm that recalls trunks rather than a conventional column grid. The metaphor is most persuasive where structure and spatial experience coincide: the columns are not scenic elements, but load-bearing members that organize circulation, acoustics, views, and the perception of height.

Hierarchy is established through the section. The main church hall rises to a floor-to-ceiling height of approximately 12.6 meters, creating a pronounced vertical release after the lower entrance and circulation spaces. Secondary rooms repeat the same timber language at reduced scale, particularly in the parish hall, where glulam columns, coffered ceilings, and large windows produce a more domestic register. This continuity prevents the building from dividing sacred and everyday functions too sharply, while still preserving the main hall as the spatial focus.

Timber Structure, Prefabrication, and Material Logic

The building is organized around a prefabricated timber system in which glulam cluster columns, insulated outer wall elements, ceiling panels, and roof beams work as coordinated structural units. This approach was not only a matter of construction efficiency. In the Finnish climate, it allowed weather-sensitive components to be fabricated under controlled conditions and assembled on site as stable elements, reducing exposure of the timber frame during construction.

The main hall required spans that exceeded those of ordinary domestic timber construction, with roof beams spanning up to approximately 13.2 meters. The solution uses tension-rod-reinforced glulam girders, in which steel and timber share structural responsibility while remaining legible within the ceiling field. Rather than concealing the complexity of the roof, the project allows the beam grid, tension rods, column bundles, and apex geometry to become part of the interior order. The result is a structure that is both technical and legible, though its expressive force depends on disciplined detailing rather than ornamental excess.

Material selection reinforces this logic of performance and weathering. Externally, cleft aspen shingles and fine sawn timber siding are left to age toward a silver-grey tone, giving the facade a surface that records climate over time. The shingles are split to create a water-shedding face without chemical treatment, while the interiors use radially sawn spruce to limit movement and improve durability. Lye-washed timber linings, form-pressed veneer acoustic panels, and integrated services extend the material system from envelope to interior surface.

Light, Craft, and Liturgical Atmosphere

Light enters the church through a controlled combination of lower glazing, clerestory slots, and high roof conditions. The lower windows connect the hall to vegetation and seasonal change, preventing the interior from becoming entirely inward-facing. Above, filtered light catches the glulam structure and the pale spruce linings, emphasizing depth within the roof and the bundled columns without relying on theatrical darkness.

The scale of craft is carried into furnishings and details. Stackable double chairs are designed so their backs align visually as continuous pews, allowing flexibility without abandoning the collective reading of congregational seating. Lattice screens, timber doors, coat-rack elements, altar furniture, birch tables, and acoustic ceiling panels operate within the same material vocabulary, bringing the architecture down to the level of hand, body, and ritual use.

Art is integrated into the spatial composition rather than mounted as an afterthought. The Tree of Life altarpiece, crucifix, baptism recess works, and foyer pieces by Antti Tanttu use mahogany and punched silver to introduce a denser register of surface and symbol at key liturgical points. Against the pale timber altar and the vertical field of columns, the tripartite altarpiece becomes both image and spatial anchor, marking the east end without overwhelming the structural clarity of the hall.

About JKMM Architects

JKMM Architects is a Helsinki-based practice whose winning entry for the 2000 invited competition for the Latokartano centre became Viikki Church. In the project, the studio frames the church as one of the few modern timber churches in Finland and as a contemporary successor to the long tradition of Finnish wooden church-building, combining ecological wooden architecture, prefabricated timber construction, and forest-like interior spaces within the Eco-Viikki sustainable residential area.
