Stereotomic and tectonic are complementary structural and formal logics in architecture: stereotomic construction uses mass — continuous materials like stone, concrete, and earth that are carved or moulded — while tectonic construction uses assembly of discrete elements such as timber frames and steel joints. Kenneth Frampton’s critical regionalism drew on this distinction to articulate a theory of honest structural expression as resistance to the placeless imagery of contemporary late modernism.
