Architecture School

Architecture School buildings are among the most programmatically and symbolically charged educational typologies, housing institutions whose graduates will go on to shape the built world — and whose physical environments are thus read as implicit manifestoes about what architecture values, how it is learned, and what kind of spatial experience an architectural education should provide. The design of schools of architecture presents unique demands: studios that accommodate individual and collaborative work at all hours, pin-up and critique spaces, model-making workshops, digital fabrication facilities, libraries, and the informal gathering spaces where much of the real intellectual exchange of architectural education takes place. From the Bauhaus in Dessau to the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid and the Southern California Institute of Architecture, celebrated campus buildings and purpose-designed architecture schools demonstrate how the learning environment itself can embody the values of design excellence that the institution seeks to transmit.
