Alicante Architecture

The Architecture of Alicante, a coastal city in southeastern Spain, features a blend of ancient Roman and Moorish influences, as well as Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and modernist styles. Some of the most notable architectural landmarks in Alicante include the Castle of Santa Barbara, a medieval fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city; the Basilica of Santa Maria, a Gothic church built in the 14th century; and the Central Market, a modernist-style market hall that opened in 1912. Alicante’s historic Old Town, known as El Barrio, is home to many well-preserved buildings and narrow, winding streets that reflect the city’s ancient roots. The Explanada de España, a palm-lined promenade along the waterfront, is another popular attraction that showcases the city’s modernist architecture.
