In 2017, Barozzi Veiga completed the design of a wine cellar and a guest house for the Guerrieri Rizzardi family in Bardolino, Italy. Both projects use podiums to reveal a simple perimeter wall to the outside that blends with the semi-rural landscape.

Taking advantage of the slight slope towards the lake and the views, the project defines a single elongated volume, inserted in the terrain following the existing terracing and the grid that orders the planting of the olive trees.

The Counts Guerrieri Rizzardi – a wine and oil-producing family – want to build the extension of their current winery, a museum, a small auditorium, a point of sale, and a restaurant. The site is close to Lago di Garda in a semi-rural area surrounded by olive tree groves and vineyards.

Rather than building an object, the project proposes the construction of a small village – a borgo – a set of small buildings contained by a perimeter wall that forms a private, intimate world. The winery and bottle conservation area makes up a podium that regularizes the steep slope of the site.

On this artificial podium, the pavilions containing the rest of the program are located. Towards the outside, the project reveals as a simple perimeter wall perfectly integrated into the semi-rural landscape. Once inside, you discover an interior garden, a silent world where vegetation, water, and the pavilions are mixed up and create a new scenery.

Guest House

As a complement to the winery’s activity, the Guerrieri Rizzardi family wanted to add – in an olive grove with splendid views and sunsets over Lago di Garda – a small guest house and a space for wine tasting for guests who wanted to extend the visit to the winery.

Taking advantage of the slight slope towards the lake and the views, the project defines a single elongated volume, inserted in the terrain following the existing terracing and the grid that orders the planting of the olive trees. It is a podium with a large roof supported only by massive triangular concrete pillars.

The podium defines a new relationship between the house, the olive grove, and the lake. Between the concrete structure, two simple glazed volumes open to the landscape contain the apartments and the wine-tasting space. A tunnel will connect the guest house with the nearby winery.
