Biography

Jørn Utzon (1918-2008) was a Danish architect best known for the Sydney Opera House, one of the most recognizable buildings of the 20th century. His work drew on nature, ancient platforms and the craft of boatbuilding to create an additive architecture of repeated elements, from courtyard housing in Denmark to his houses on Mallorca.

Training and Travels

Born in Copenhagen and raised in Aalborg, where his father directed a shipyard, Utzon studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1942. He spent the war years working in Stockholm, worked briefly with Alvar Aalto in Helsinki, and traveled widely in Morocco, the United States, where he met Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mexico, where the platforms of the Maya temples left a lasting impression.

The Sydney Opera House

In 1957 Utzon won the international competition for the Sydney Opera House with a scheme of sail-like shells rising from a massive platform. Years of structural research led to a solution based on segments of a single sphere, but conflicts with the new state government led him to resign in 1966. The building opened in 1973 without his interiors and was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2007.

Additive Architecture

In Denmark Utzon developed courtyard housing at Kingo and Fredensborg and the Bagsværd Church, whose plain exterior conceals a billowing, cloud-like concrete vault. On Mallorca he built Can Lis for his family, followed by Can Feliz, and in Kuwait he completed the National Assembly in 1982.

Recognition

Utzon received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1978 and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2003. Late in life he was reconciled with the Opera House, preparing design principles for its future, and the Utzon Center in Aalborg, designed with his son Kim, opened in 2008, the year of his death.
