Biography

Balkrishna Doshi (1927-2023) was an Indian architect, urban planner and educator who fused the lessons of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn with Indian traditions, climate and ways of life. Over seven decades he built institutions, housing and campuses that made him a central figure of Indian modernism and, in 2018, the first Indian laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

With Le Corbusier and Kahn

Born in Pune, Doshi studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay before traveling to Europe, where from 1951 he worked with Le Corbusier in Paris. He returned to India to supervise Le Corbusier’s projects in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh, and later collaborated with Louis Kahn on the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad.

Vastushilpa and CEPT

In 1956 he founded his practice, Vastushilpa, in Ahmedabad, and in 1962 he established the School of Architecture that became CEPT University. Works such as the Institute of Indology and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore translated modern architecture into spaces shaped by Indian climate, courtyards and pathways.

Sangath and Aranya

His studio, Sangath (1980), with its vaulted, partly sunken forms and broken-tile mosaics, became a manifesto of his approach. The Aranya Low-Cost Housing project in Indore, which won an Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and the underground gallery Amdavad ni Gufa, created with the artist M. F. Husain, showed the breadth of his social and artistic concerns.

Recognition

Doshi received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2018 and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 2022. He died in Ahmedabad in January 2023, aged 95, and was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
