Design Intent and Spatial Configuration
The architectural ambition of AD FUTURE is to create a continuous narrative that visually and experientially connects the past with the future. This is achieved by juxtaposing traditional Chaoshan architectural elements with contemporary design choices, facilitating a seamless dialogue between eras. An interplay of Yingge dance motifs and international artistic influences further enriches this temporal discourse.
The spatial organization is both rigorous and flexible, serving to rejuvenate village dynamics by engaging younger generations with a modern reinterpretation of historical forms. The central courtyard acts as the heart of the project, not just architecturally but also socially, offering a fluid transition between private contemplation and public interaction.
Strategy and Craft
The material strategy emphasizes a harmonious blend of the old and the new. The preservation of the original wooden flooring enhances the authenticity of the space, while the introduction of red geometric elements in the courtyard injects a vibrant, modern dynamism. These architectural interventions maintain the integrity of the structure while addressing the functional needs of contemporary life.
Beyond structural materials, the interiors employ a curated collection of furnishings and art that narrate a temporal evolution. From vintage rattan chairs to contemporary portraits, the space continuously references and reinvents its cultural lineage, resonating with a global audience while maintaining its local essence.
Environmental and Cultural Context
AD FUTURE offers a thoughtful response to the environmental and cultural context of Shantou, aiming to reinvigorate the village of Siwei through a contemporary cultural lens. Integrating masterpieces like the Yingge dance series by Zheng Shaowen, the design reflects the symbiotic relationship between architectural spaces and cultural practices, challenging the modern flight from rural roots.
The project’s commitment to celebrating the Chaoyang humanistic spirit is evident in its attempt to merge global artistic sensibilities with local heritage. By inviting international collaborations, the project encourages cultural convergence, fostering connections across borders while preserving the soul of the Chaoshan tradition.
Experiential Qualities and Architectural Atmosphere
Experientially, AD FUTURE transcends typical boundaries, offering an evocative journey through time and space. Light, sound, and movement are choreographed to cultivate a serene yet dynamic ambiance. Natural light floods the interiors through skillfully reconfigured openings, creating a dialogue with the crafted soundscapes that echo the site’s cultural heartbeat.
The project’s intimate scale and thoughtful circulation facilitate both solitary reflection and communal engagement. This balance of seclusion and openness extends an invitation to visitors, offering a place of contemplation that is equally alive with potential, as each element participates in a larger choreographed symphony of architecture, culture, and memory.
