The “Roof Sentiment”  installation by SOA constitutes both a modern landmark with its light steel structure and a historical reference due to the woven reed used for shading.

“When it rains, you see rain running down the reeds. When the wind blows, you will hear the reed blinds gently hitting each other. On a clear day, the reed blinds will create different shades of sunlight”

-Lee Chi-hoon

The “Roof Sentiment”  installation was designed and developed by Lee Chi-hoon and Kang Ye-rin – together known as Society of Architecture – and won the 2015 Young Architects Program, composed by the MMCA, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Hyundai Card.

The installation serves as a characteristic summer shading device within the “hostile concrete city”. The roof consists of a 25 meters span woven reed blinds held together, with a set of wires that draw a wave design. The steel pipe structure that bears this roof is located on the top of a forest-like ground floor, covered with “wild plants” and pine tree bark bits that stimulate the user’s flair when it rains.

The roof constitutes an icon of modernity with its light steel structure but also refers to the historical background of Seoul using the traditional woven reed as a hedge.
