Parish Church in Pueblo Serena Description by the Architects

The church, prominently situated on a spacious plaza to the southeast of the development, seamlessly integrates with the communal outdoor area. This strategic placement allows the plaza to serve as an extension of the church, accommodating larger gatherings during religious ceremonies and festivities that naturally extend outdoors. The main entrance of the church directly faces this plaza, featuring an expansive 11.5-meter-wide doorway that seamlessly merges the church’s interior with the plaza, symbolically and physically opening up the sacred space to the community.

Architecturally, the church’s design is a contemporary interpretation of traditional church layouts, drawing inspiration from early Christian temples. While it respects historical forms, its modernity is unmistakable, striking a balance between familiarity and innovation. The structure follows a basilican plan, with a central nave approximately 15 meters high, leading the eye towards the altar. The interior is bathed in natural light from various sources, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. Notably, a long glass wall behind the baptistery extends along the nave, offering views of a serene enclosed patio. Above this area, a modern take on a rose window—a nine-square grid with colored glass—faces west.

On the southeastern side, three intimate chapels are illuminated by high skylights, creating a serene, contemplative space. The design’s crowning feature is above the altar: a large skylight that casts a divine light onto an inclined panel, cleverly sectioned into four parts to reveal a luminous cross. This interplay of light and architecture not only symbolizes the sacred but also brings a dynamic, spiritual quality to the space.
